There is still little known about the original building's construction of Palazzo Chablais: the recent restoration works have shown that the original foundation of the building is prior to the fifteenth century. Given in 1642 to the Cardinal Maurizio of Savoy, who chose it as his residence, it later became home to the offices of the Royal Court.

In 1753, King Carlo Emmanuele III commissioned the court architect Benedetto Alfieri the task of reconstructing the residence for his second son Benedetto Maria Maurizio, Duke of Chablais. It was then redesigned as the facade and built the majestic staircase that leads to the main floor, rich of furniture, stucco, wood paneling, mirrors and lintels painted by painters such as Francesco De Mura and Gregorio Guglielmi.

During the Napoleonic period the palace was the seat of governor of Camillo Borghese and his famous wife, Paolina Borghese. It returned to the Savoy with the Restoration, it became the residence of King Carlo Felice and then Ferdinando Duke of Genoa, the second son of Carlo Alberto. In 1851 Margaret was born, who was the first queen of Italy.

Damaged by bombing during the Second World War, it was given to the State property. The building, which is today completely restored, houses the Regional Directorate for Cultural Heritage and Landscape of the Piedmont along with offices of the Superintendence.
