Augusta Bagiennorum

Augusta Bagiennorum

The archaeological remains of the ancient Roman town of Augusta Bagiennorum are now about two kilometers from the modern town ofBene Vagienna, on a fertile and flat area, known as Plain of Roncaglia, that is currently an agricultural land of high environmental interest, bounded on the south-east from the valley of the Mondalavian river, a tributary of the Tanaro, and to the north-west, the hills that separate it from the valley of the Stura di Demonte. Subject to archaeological protection since 1933, it became a Special Nature Reserve and is part of the Park Corporation of the valleys of Cuneo.

Today of the ancient city it is possible to see the ruins of some public nature buildings: first, the Theater that, along with the quadrangle behind the center that lies on the base of a temple dedicated to a still unknown divinity, perhaps it is Bacchus because of its connection with the nearby theater building, occupies the area of the city to the south-east of the forum and visits the State property archaeological area. Above the temple, kept at the foundation level, was built a small Christian Basilica, which can be recognized as the outer walls with the major apse between two minors, whose construction phases can be traced back to the early Christian period (V-VI century AD) and the medieval period (VII-VIII century AD). On the land overlooking the archaeological area some facilities are preserved related to housing or perhaps workshops, consisting of a series of rooms organized around a central courtyard and are characterized by the presence of ditches and a drain of a furnace, confirming the residential character and craft of the complex, dated to the first imperial age (I-II century AD). Nothing is visible instead of the Forum.

Recently, however, revealed new data on the Amphitheatre located outside the city and recognized by the elliptical form of the embankment at the side of the Roncaglia road, close to the Cascina Ellena, while the arena is a depression of an elliptical form too, today still cultivated.

The date is still uncertain, but based on the construction technique we can assume that the monument dates back to the first half of the I century AD.
